Day 7: Time to Unwind

Image
Joni The last day of YouthWorks is always bittersweet. Everyone is looking forward to being home, but they are sad to leave the people they have spent time with for the week. It's also hard to come out of the high of a mission trip where you're always thinking about God and his plan for you, and coming back to reality.  Fortunately we got to soften the blow of our last day by fulfilling one of their wishes: This year's YouthWorks theme is "The Good Life" - not what people usually mean by it: eating good food, drinking a lot and spending a lot on things for themselves. This type of Good Life that Miley Cyrus, Kanye, Weezer and One Republic all talk about may feel good for a short while and for a few people, but it doesn't bring God's best for all time and for all people.  God created the world good and wanted humans to enjoy it and to love one another and to love Him. The Good Life we talked about this week is hel...

Day 6 (Thursday): Washing the feet of others

Image
Sammi Today, I woke up after a wonderful seven hours of rest. After staring at the ceiling blankly for a couple minutes, I proceeded to get ready for the day by changing, cleaning up my face, and gathering my shower things. After breakfast and devotions, my service group left for our service site, St. Vincent’s. There, we sat around for an hour because the head chef wouldn’t give us anything to do. At one point, Wesley and I decided to ask the chef if she had anything to do, but she told us to sit down. A minute later, she said, “Where are the two boys who wanted something to do earlier?” J . At 10:30 a.m., we started serving lunch, first to the residents that lived at St. Vincent’s, then to the public homeless. In all, we served around 700 meals today, slightly less than the first three days. To celebrate a week of service, Aaron took us to Dave and Busters where we ordered food, I got a Shirley Temple, and wasted credits on games we lost. Then, we went back to St. Vincen...

Day 5 (Wednesday): Prayer-walking the Rose Garden

Image
Hannah Today we just cleaned our beds out of the sanctuary for church service at night, then had breakfast. At the soup kitchen I counted 304 pieces of chicken, for two trays. I spent it distributing hot dog buns and sliced bread.  A guy said I was really nice and he would remember me. A guy said Tim was lazy before Tim started scanning IDs. Then some lady just came over, rudely snatched a pack of napkins that are off limits, ripped it open, and took them.  We also FINALLY got milk tea. The people [from the other churches] who never tried boba or milk tea had some. THEY HATED IT. Crazy people. I had ginger milk tea, Sammi got oolong milk tea, Tim got original, and Wesley got honey green tea with lychee jelly. Taking off all the door hardware at Habitat for Humanity before the building is demolished Yasmine can fit in an office drawer...  The crew working at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore Playing on the lawn at St. Vincent'...

Day 4 (Tuesday): Serving and Playing

Image
Tim So today it was the second day of serving the people at the soup kitchen. It was cool, we served about 900 people, and some guy accidentally urinated on himself. We prayed for him, and I hope he’s doing well. Anyway, after that we ate and then went to Belmont Park, which is an amusement park, like Boardwalk. Wesley and I won 3 big basketballs and we were happy. I scammed them lol. Sorting plums at the San Diego Food Bank San Diego Food Bank feeds an average of 400,000 per month Some of the plums were really cool shapes (some people hated them) Eating Dole Whip Hannah and Cierra doing a ropes course "Option Night" means fun at the Boardwalk

Day 3 (Monday): Angry People

Image
Wesley Today, is 2 nd day of working in the community to help feed the homeless. In the morning we helped make the food to help feed the homeless. The meal today was beef stew, chicken, broccoli, mac-and-cheese. There were tons of nice people but also angry people. Most of the people were nice but today there was one guy who got angry because we ran out of hamburger patties. He started to riot and even tried to get other people to protest with him. He finally got too angry and left the store. It was surprisingly packed, I did not expect to feed over 900 people in one morning. The people that really kept me going was the people that told me that I was doing great and “God bless you” The part that got me angry was that sometimes the people are ungrateful for their free food and they are complaining. This actually happened quite a lot. Playing Slapjack during break time

Day 3 (Monday): First Day at Service Sites

Image
Ada Today, we helped out at the boys and girls club. We saw really cute kids like Isabella, Sophia, and Isaac. Later, we went to the senior home to eat lunch. The funny thing was that we forgot our cooler with our lunches. Thank goodness there were cup noodles in our car. It was really fun [[; I named all the leaders and made friends with them. Sunshine, Flower, Daisy, Kangeroo, and Jay.  Large Group Gathering (LGG): discussion groups Yasmine Hi, today was our first day working for the community,   we started off the morning helping at a boys and girls camp. Joni told me that the camp was for kids who   had a bad background, we loved playing with the kids, though there was some bullying. The afternoon we went to a senior home. It was a lot of fun talking to all the seniors. A little later we went to the Mexico border, but I stuck my hand through. We went down to the beach later, but we didn’t get wet.  Hannah Also, someone was mopping the...

Day 2 (Sunday): Arriving at Youthworks

Image
Cierra Today, we woke up in Matt’s house (Joni’s Brother). All the girls got ready to go swimming. Ada went into the dog cage and pretended to be sleeping there all night. I ate cereal, while some others had a breakfast sandwich.  The boys got there around 10:00 A.M. We  got ready for swimming. Swimming was one of the most entertaining things to do today. We got time to hang out with our group at the swimming pool. Everyone was pushing each other into the pool when we least expected it. I think I got pushed the most. I should be more aware of my surroundings.  Then we got ready to go to San Diego. As usual we had to stop at a gas station for someone to pee. Then Tim went to buy a drink but the drink was expired. He got mad and ran back into the station to get another drink. Poor Tim he doesn’t have any luck when buying things. So we went to San Diego while both of our cars were racing to get there. My car got there first! YAY! We met so...
